The 2 day CITB SMSTS Refresher Training course is designed for candidates who have already passed the SMSTS Course. All SMSTS certificates issued after 1st January 2005 are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Candidates will be required to show their original 5 day certificate and if known provide details of where and when they took the course. Delegates MUST attend both days in order to obtain their certification..By attending the SMSTS refresher course delegates will be updated on developments in construction legislation and use of appropriate best practice. The course will also enhance existing managerial skills necessary to achieve compliance with any new legal duties and responsibilities placed on them and their workforce.* PLEASE NOTE - It will take approximately 6-8 weeks for CSKILLS to issue certification for this course *Course ObjectivesAt the end of the SMSTS Refresher course successful candidates will be able to: -Manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management and supervisory roleUnderstand their legal, moral and social obligations to maintain a healthy and safe site, as well as consider the benefits and costs of implementation to their organisationIdentify and avoid potential hazards on sitePrepare method statements, risk assessments and other statutory requirements of the Health and Safety at Work ActCourse AgendaThe SMSTS Refresher course will cover the following topics: -Legislation, ACOP updates with discussions on impact and practical aspects of complianceOverview of proposed/impending legislationRIDDOR - Accident statistics, costs, causes, management responsibilities/methods in preventionHSE's current focus on construction activitiesSafety management systems, policies, plans and performance measuringManagement of ContractorsCommunication and consultation aspects, effective use of 'toolbox talks' and 'site inductions'Behavioural Safety including awareness of human error, stress and preventionSyndicate exercisesAssessmentThroughout the course delegates will be assessed. At the end of the SMSTS Refresher course, each individual has to pass an examination and present a suitable health and safety solution to a site activity which qualifies them for the Construction Site Managers Safety Certificate.Delegates must attend both of the days, in accordance with the course programme, to achieve the necessary learning objectives and qualify for re-certification. Successful candidates will be issued with the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS Refresher) certificate which is valid for 5 years.

OverviewThe SSSTS course is intended for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities. It provides supervisors with an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as their legal responsibilities relevant to their work activities. It will highlight the requirement to promote health and safety to supervise effectively. The SSSTS course is endorsed by Build UK (formerly the United Kingdom Contractors Group) as the standard training for all supervisors working on their sites.Who should attend?Site supervisors or those with supervisory responsibilities would benefit from the SSSTS course.DurationThe SSSTS course lasts 2 days.Aims and ObjectivesThe SSSTS course aims to ensure that all those given supervisory responsibilities understand:Why they are carrying out their identified dutiesWhat is expected of them and to ensure that they contribute to the safety of the work place.OutcomesOn successful completion of the SSSTS course, delegates will:Understand the problems of the industryHave an understanding of how health and safety law is structured and how it applies to supervisorsIdentify how their supervisory role fits in with the management structure in controlling the site safelyCarry out risk assessments and understand the need for method statementsCarry out effective site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefingsBe able to monitor site activities effectivelyUnderstand the importance of timely intervention when bad practice is identified.DeliveryThe method of assessment will be by multiple-choice questions at the end of the SSSTS course as well as being expected to be interactive during the course.AttendanceDelegates are required to attend both sessions, since without full attendance and achievement in the examination the Construction Site Supervisors Safety (SSSTS) Certificate cannot be made.Delegates must attend the days in order and, where not on consecutive days, must complete the SSSTS course within two weeks. It forms the basis of assessment as to whether or not a delegate has successfully achieved a satisfactory level of understanding to be awarded the Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) certificate.The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time. Delegates are permitted to use the GE706 Site Safety Simplified publication for the last ten minutes of the examination period. The examination pass mark is 72%.
